Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) provides direct patient care to surgical patients throughout the perioperative period. Assists the surgeon and special procedure physicians in the care and treatment of surgical patients by performing specialized technical skills at both Tahoe Forest Hospital and Incline Village Community Hospital.   Bases professional and practice behaviors on the knowledge and application of the scope of practice for the Surgical Nurse First Assistant as defined by the state, professional practice standards and the hospital’s credentialing and privileging processes.  


  • Injection of local anesthesia.
  • Insertion of trocars, preparation of grafts, use of appropriate suturing or stapling devices, securing drains, application of casts, changing dressings, and other duties as approved and assigned by the supervising surgeon.
  • Assists with positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient for the operative procedure.
  • Applies knowledge of infection control and aseptic technique.
  • Provides intraoperative retracting and surgical exposure.
  • Assists operating room staff with opening sterile supplies and turning over the rooms between cases.
  • Cauterizes wounds and vessels.
  • Exercises critical thinking in all aspects of the first assistant role.
  • Establishes and maintains a safe environment.
  • Provides technical first assistance to the primary surgeon in the operating room.
  • Participates in departmental and facility-wide performance improvement.
  • Is available to work standby and callback.
  • May function as scrub or circulator when not needed as an assist.
  • Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior.
  • Complies with System policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Graduation from a National League of Nursing (NLN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or equivalent school of nursing. Must have completed a nursing education program that included clinical experiences with actual patients under the supervision of qualified faculty.

Minimum five years’ scrubbing and circulating surgical experience. Completion of accredited surgical first assist program.


Current California and Nevada Registered Nurse license

Current Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) Certification

Basic Life Support for Healthcare upon hire.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) upon hire.

Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS). Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS and ACLS certification) which must be completed within three (3) months of hire.


Preferred: Two years’ experience as first assist.

Preferred: Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR)

Basic knowledge of sterile processing required.   Has knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and techniques to facilitate the physician’s performance of invasive and therapeutic procedures.
