UCF College of Nursing

Company Overview

UCF is a thriving pre-eminent research university located in metropolitan Orlando, benefitting from a diverse faculty and staff who create a welcoming environment and opportunities to grow, learn and succeed. With more than 68,000 students, UCF is the largest university by enrollment in Florida and one of the largest in the nation. It has more than 11,000 employees and an operating budget of $1.7 billion. The Washington Post last year showcased how UCF is in “the vanguard of an insurgency that aims to demolish the popular belief that exclusivity is a virtue in higher education” because of our mission of meeting our region’s demand and providing access to high-quality education.

Centrally located, Orlando is at the epicenter of modeling, simulation and training, with 150+ industries, the acquisition commands for the Army, Navy and Marine Corps, the Air Force Agency for Modeling & Simulation, plus 10 other federal government agencies and joint commands.

The University of Central Florida is at the heart of it all, bringing together interdisciplinary teams of healthcare educators, practitioners, computer scientists, and engineers to develop and use cutting-edge applications for simulation, training (individuals and teams), and practice to advance healthcare.

Current faculty research areas in the College of Nursing include developing innovative approaches to simulation, technology and modeling; improving quality, safety and patient outcomes; and reducing disparities in aging and vulnerable populations. Additionally, UCF has formed nine interdisciplinary faculty clusters spanning all of its academic colleges. Nursing faculty are currently participating in two of the nine clusters: 1. Disability, Aging and Technology and 2. Violence Against Women.

Other Research Accolades:

UCF ranks among the nation’s 10 most innovative universities, ahead of Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Harvard and Duke, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges of 2019 guide. UCF is the only school in Florida on the list.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation cites UCF as an example of what the future of higher education should look like. In 2018, Bill Gates wrote on his blog, “Conventional wisdom in higher education dictates that bigger is not better. … UCF is challenging this storyline by proving that a university can have it all: a large, diverse student population, high standards and affordable tuition.” He cited UCF’s success in tripling the size of the student body since 1992 while also “reducing costs, boosting its graduate rate and expanding access for low-income and first-generation students.”

The Carnegie Foundation classifies UCF as a “highest research activity” institution, which is the foundation’s top ranking.

UCF’s annual research funding was a record $183 million in FY2018.

UCF ranked 28th in the nation among public universities and 67th in the world for the number of U.S. patents it secured in 2017, according to the National Academy of Inventors. Dr. Shin Tson Wu, who holds 80 patents and is a pioneer in optics research and Dr. Sudipta Seal, who holds 48 patents and has led groundbreaking therapeutic applications in regenerative nanomedicine, are both inductees into the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame.

UCF is ranked among the best in the nation for research leading to new tech spinoffs, according to a report from The Milken Institute. The rankings put UCF alongside institutions such as Columbia University, MIT and Carnegie Mellon University.
